Pierre Messmer (1916-2007) was a French politician. He was an important figure of the French Resistance during the World War II. He served as Minister of Armies under Charles de Gaulle (1960-1969) and then as Prime Minister under Georges Pompidou (1972-1974).
He was elected a member of the Académie Française in 1999.
He was also the Mayor of Sarrebourg from 1971 to 1989.
After his death, the city of Sarrebourg received a legacy of 5000 books belonging to Mr Messmer.
Since 2009, Pierre Messmer’s book collection is opened to the public.
