CONCERT BACH ON THE SHOULDERS OF VIVALDI

In his day, Vivaldi was much more widely known and celebrated than the 'young Bach from Weimar'. But when the latter seized upon the concerto (invented by Torelli and developed by Vivaldi) by converting a concerto for four violins into a concerto for four keyboards, it could be said that he channelled Vivaldi's solo energy into a truly fleshed-out, contrapuntal and complex 'composition'.
Rarely performed in public concerts because of the challenge of bringing together four Latvians (and as many Calvinists...), these works evoke a veritable competition. The man who was to become the Leipzig Cantor knew how to laugh!
